Commissioning is how healthcare services are planned, purchased and monitored. But where do you start when it comes to engaging your NHS commissioner about your rehab pilot or project idea?

In this webinar, which is part of our member webinar series, find out:

  • How NHS commissioning works
  • How to engage with NHS commissioners and what you need to support your case
  • How you can transition from a career in physiotherapy to one in NHS commissioning
  • How to become a CSP Rehab Champion!
  • Come with your burning questions for James Mitchell, senior commissioning manager (rehabilitation) and clinical lead therapist

Senior commissioning manager (rehabilitation) and clinical lead therapist programme lead, neurology CPG – NHS Gloucestershire, Integrated Commissioning Directorate

James Mitchell's physiotherapy career began in the private sector. He started as a therapy assistant at a neuro rehab centre before studying physiotherapy at the University of Essex, where he graduated in 2009. He gained hands-on experience, which helped him to apply his academic knowledge in practice. James worked at Ramsay Health Care in complex neuro rehabilitation, eventually becoming a therapy manager and pursuing further leadership qualifications. He then took on a role as operations manager in a private care company while maintaining his physiotherapy practice, before returning to Ramsay Health Care as a neuro pathway and development manager.

He joined NHS Gloucestershire Integrated Commissioning Directorate as the health and social care commissioning manager in rehabilitation, progressing to the role of senior commissioning manager in rehabilitation and clinical lead therapist for NHS Gloucestershire. He is also programme lead for the neurology clinical programme group.

Most recently, James has become a CSP Rehab Champion, joining the our campaign to push for universal access to rehabilitation.

He believes his physiotherapy background is ideal for commissioning roles, emphasising the importance of collaboration, communication, and understanding the needs of teams and patients. He encourages early-career physiotherapists to explore leadership and management roles early on.
