Members are encouraged to share Never too Late, a new CSP animation highlighting the importance of physical activity to maintain strong muscles and bones in later life.
Never too Late, a key part of the CSP’s Love activity, Hate exercise? campaign, will be promoted across the UK on 1 October, Older People’s Day.
The animation follows on from a Public Health England review jointly commissioned by the Centre for Ageing Better, published in July. The review highlights that people who rely on walks and gardening to keep fit as they age may be neglecting muscle, bone and balance strengthening activities, putting them at a significantly increased risk of falls.
‘We are encouraging members to share the Never too Late animation with their older patients,’ said Becca Bryant, head of CSP campaigns and regional engagement.
‘It will let them know that, even if they have lost muscle mass, many can still do something about it by taking up physically demanding activities such as dancing, racket sports, ball games or water aerobics.’
The Never too Late animation, and an accompanying public information leaflet, are available at www.csp.org.uk/nevertoolate
Members who have signed up to the Love activity Hate exercise? campaign will automatically receive copies of the leaflet. It is aimed at people approaching retirement, or recently retired, and focuses on maintaining strength.
Advice on how to build strengthening activities into everyday life, plus suggestions for activities that people may want to consider taking up, or starting again, are included in the leaflet.
‘More than 2,000 CSP members have signed up to Love activity Hate exercise? and we are encouraging them to use its resources to take part in Older People’s Day,’ Ms Bryant added.
Members who want to organise an Older People’s Day event to promote physio falls prevention advice to GPs and patients, can also use PowerPoint presentations and other resources available on the CSP website.
