In this issue of Frontline, says managing editor Lynn Eaton, we look at a topic that is central to the future of physiotherapy: how do we ensure that students get the quality practice placements they need.
It’s set against the backdrop of the CSP’s call for 500 more physiotherapists to enter the workforce a year – part of its election agenda.
As the ‘Practice makes perfect’ article rightly points out, the role of the physiotherapist is changing and will continue to evolve in the years ahead. That means fresh opportunities for CSP members, but will also mean developing new skill-sets and a willingness to adapt to new situations.
The CSP campaign ‘Shaping physio’ encourages members to take personal responsibility for nurturing the workforce of the future – by offering suitable practice placements in a variety of settings. Yes, it may feel like an additional burden at an already stressful time, but if members help to increase the pool of well-trained physiotherapists, they’ll help to underpin the profession as a whole in the longer term.
Some of you may be old enough to recall a campaign to recruit more teachers, back in 1999. ‘Everyone remembers a good teacher’ ran the advertisement. So, think about the person you learned most from while you were a student. What skills or attribute did you most admire? How often do you find yourself wondering what he or she would have done in this situation’?
It’s payback time: your turn to help someone get their foot on the physiotherapy ladder.
